Day 1 – Australia to Shanghai
Fly with Singapore Airlines to Shanghai and transfer to your hotel. See the city lights on an evening Huangpu River Cruise. Stay two nights at the Grand Mercure Central Hotel.
Day 2 – Shanghai
Start the day with a panoramic view over the city from the top of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Learn about Shanghai’s development from a small village to the present metropolis at the History Museum at the base of the tower. Visit the classical Yu Garden and the adjoining bazaar. In the evening attend an acrobatic show. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Shanghai to Lanzhou
Take a guided stroll along the Bund and former French Concession. Transfer to airport for the flight to Lanzhou. Stay one night at the Jinjiang Sunshine Hotel. (B,L)
Day 4 – Depart Lanzhou
Visit White Pagoda Hill Park then transfer to rail station to board the train to Lhasa, departing at midday. Begin your journey on the world’s highest and longest plateau railroad, much of it at an altitude of between 4,000 and 5,000 metres above sea level. Accommodation is in soft class, four-share compartments. No meals are included, but can be purchased on the train. Oxygen enrichment systems operate to combat altitude sickness. Stay one night on the train. (B,L)
Day 5 – Arrive Lhasa
Relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Arrive Lhasa at 3.40pm when you will be met and transferred to your hotel where a quiet evening is recommended to acclimatize to the high altitude. Stay four nights at the Gang Gyen Hotel.
Day 6 – Lhasa
Your sightseeing begins with a visit to the imposing Potala Palace, once the home of the Dalai Lama. Chapels and galleries within the palace are open to visitors. Visit Jokhang Monastery, home of the most precious Buddha image in Tibet. Pilgrims holding prayer wheels can be seen walking in a clockwise direction around the monastery. Browse through the Barkhor Bazaar where a wide variety of Tibetan handicrafts are on display. Visit the Tibet Museum with exhibitions of Tibet’s past and hopes for the future. (B,L)
Day 7 – Lhasa
Travel to Drepung Monastery, a Yellow Hat Sect where the Dalai Lamas were trained, and on to Norbulingka Park, former summer palace of the 7th Dalai Lama. Also visit Sera Monastery where the monks can be seen in red robes and curved yellow hats. (B,L)
Day 8 – Lhasa
Drive to Namtso Lake to see the grasslands and nomads of North Tibet. (B,L)
Day 9 – Lhasa to Gyantse
Drive to Gyantse crossing the Khamba La (4790 metres) from where you can see one of the four Sacred Lakes and huge mountain ranges. Visit the Baichoil Monastery. Stay one night at Ye Ti Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 10 – Gyantse to Shigatse
Drive to Shigatse and visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in the 15th century, where the monks still practice the art of making mandalas with coloured sands. Stay one night at the Shigatse Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 11- Shigatse to Lhasa
Drive back to Lhasa along the river road, with spectacular mountain views at every turn. Stay one night at the Gang Gyen Hotel. (B,L)
Day 12 – Lhasa to Chengdu
Fly to Chengdu and connect with international flights home. (B)
Day 13 – Arrive Australia
BASE CAMP & NEPAL OPTION
Instead of travelling back to Lhasa and Chengdu, add on a visit to Everest Base Camp and entry to Nepal.
Day 1 to 10 – As per the Tibet Experience tour.
Day 11 – Shigatse to Shegar
Drive to Shegar, visiting Sakya Monastery en route. Stay two nights at the Tingri Everest Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 12 – Everest Base Camp excursion
Although it’s just 100km from Shegar to Everest Base Camp (5200m), it takes about 4 hours as the winding roads demand much caution. The views are stupendous on a clear day and feature a huge sweep of the Himalaya range. Catch your first sight of the mighty Everest at Base Camp. (B,L,D)
Day 13 – Shegar to Zhangmu
Drive to Zhangmu, staying one night at the Zhangmu Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 14 – Zhangmu to Nepal
Your guide will escort you to the Tibet-Nepal border, where the tour ends. Ask InterAsia about tours in Nepal. (B)
